Wondered why student’s grades have decreased? Why students and teachers have been so tired lately after staying up late reading? Why there is an uproar about a movie coming out on March 23rd? The answer is simple- The Hunger Games craze is sweeping the nation and Mount de Sales. The best selling book series, written by Suzanne Collins, is one of the fastest growing sensations since 2008 when the first book was published.
Senior Emily Sipes said, “I didn’t want to read the books at first because I didn’t want to jump on the band wagon. However, my friends kept telling me to give them a shot and once I started reading, I couldn’t stop.”
The story takes place in Panem, post-apocalyptic North America, which is divided into 12 districts. Every year, the Capitol, which dictates and controls the districts, hosts an event called The Hunger Games in order to remind the districts that they have complete and total control. Before the games begin one boy and one girl, between the ages of 12 and 18, are chosen to represent their district in a “game” where they are forced to kill the other 23 tributes in order to survive.
Fun fact! Junior Patty Butrim wrote a letter to actress Jennifer Lawrence, who plays Katniss Everdeen in the soon to be released movie. “The only reason I wrote to her was because I was bored one afternoon,” said Patty. “Little did I know that Jennifer would respond, send me a personalized, autographed photo and a Mockingjay pin. I literally cried when I opened the unexpected gift,” she said with a smile.
