This year’s student appreciation day was not like any other Mount de Sales has had in the past. Instead of the usual student-faculty volleyball game, students and faculty participated in a number of zany activities.
“This year was ten times more interactive than previous years and it gave more students a chance to participate,” said senior Emma Talbot.
The energy in the gym was unreal. The crowd was full with enthusiasm and was pumped up. Activities included a clothing relay race, a huge game of freeze dance, and sheet relays. The crowd was cheering on their feet for most of the time. There was not a dull moment in the assembly. Between Ms. Collyer pulling Mrs. Salazar on the sheet and girls dressing up in crazy clothes, there were always smiles on the crowd’s faces. At the end of the assembly, the seniors earned the most spirit points.
“The games were really fun! Even though I didn’t participate, I still had fun watching. One of the funniest parts was when Hannah Shafer’s head got stuck in the MSJ football helmet,” said sophomore Grace Kerr.
Kelly Phelan never let the assembly get boring. She dressed up in crazy orange and white striped overalls and MC'd the assembly. Close by Kelly’s side was Cara Dawson, who was dressed up in a groundhog suit to celebrate Groundhogs’ day.
“It was so hot in that groundhog suit, I thought I was going to pass out,” said senior Cara Dawson.
Mrs. Schorr surprised the students introducing her friend and boxing champion Franchon Crews. Franchon participated in the freeze dance game, gave a heartwarming talk about her life, and even performed a Whitney Houston classic “Greatest Love of All”. At the end of the assembly, the whole crowd came down onto the gym floor and extended their arms over Franchon, her teammate, and coach and said a prayer to wish them luck at Francon’s Olympic trials.
“Franchon is such an inspiration. She is the perfect example of someone who came from the bottom all the way to the top,” said senior Chantel Hunter.
