Bye Bye Birdie Takes Flight on Opening Night

A creative way to modernize the musical “Bye Bye Birdie” would be to replace Conrad Birdie with Justin Beiber and call it “Bye Bye Beiber.”

“When I first saw the cast list I was so excited and shocked to have such a big role because I’m a junior and the leading roles usually go to seniors,” said junior Lara Miller, who played Kim MacAfee, one of the leads.

Mount de Sales performed “Bye Bye Birdie” for their winter musical at the Mount Saint Joseph Fine Arts Center from January 27 through January 29. Lively music and energetic dance numbers gave this musical a real kick. The show almost sold out.

“When the audience is animated it makes the actors perform better because they know they are appreciated and feel good. I know everyone would agree that Saturday was the best,” said Miller.

The show opened with news that teen heartthrob Conrad Birdie was being drafted into the army. Obsessive fans protested with brightly colored picket signs that said things like “Don’t Fly Away Birdie,” “Drafting Birdie is Dirdie,” and “War Will Ruffle His Feathers!” The costumes were equally vibrant and colors flew off the stage.

“I was really happy we got to use colored lights,” said sophomore Molly Babcock, one of the light operators.

Whether it was “We Love You Conrad” or “Spanish Rose,” the audience responded with vigorous applauding every time.

“I really liked how the pit band gave support to what was going on onstage. When it’s good it’s good, and it was good,” said musical director Mr. Jeff Hosier.
